Tan Sri Low Yat, a visionary and pioneer of Malaysia’s property and construction market. His vision and foresight led the group to diversify its portfolio from construction to mining, cement manufacturing, banking and tyre manufacturing besides notable developments in the hospitality and the real estate sectors.
Landmark buildings during his leadership include the Victoria Institution at Petaling Street, government bungalows at Federal Hill, shop houses along Jalan Imbi, Tong Shin Terrace and Jalan Tiong Nam off Jalan Raja Laut, the clubhouse of Royal Selangor Club, the government administrative complex at Jalan Petaling and the first international hotel, The Federal, that debuted on 31 August 1957, the day Malaysia was proclaimed independent. In recognition for his vast contribution in nation building, the founder was bestowed with the honorary titles of Dato and Tan Sri.
In 1971, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Low Yow Chuan, succeeded as group chairman & MD of the Low Yat Group, further expanding the group’s portfolio of projects and businesses. Under his guidance and leadership, it’s vast portfolio of projects were further enhanced. He also achieved yet another milestone for the group through his vast contribution in promoting tourism growth in Kuala Lumpur. Following the successful completion of The Federal Hotel, he continued his journey in developing several hotels key hotels in other Malaysian states as well as embarking into the retail sector.
Tan Sri Datuk Seri Low was awarded FIABCI Malaysia’s Property Man of the year in 1994. In 2014, he was also bestowed with the mayor’s commendable award for outstanding contribution at the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Awards. In the late 90’s, the group expanded its presence further with the development of hotels in Australia and Japan.
Today, the third and fourth generation of the Low Yat family are continually growing and diversifying the company domestically and internationally whilst keeping in line with the growing legacy of its many businesses.
